The Food of Prophet Shu’aib (Jethro – PBUH)

In the chronological sequence of prophetic history, Prophet Shu’aib (peace be upon him) comes after Prophet Yusuf. He was sent to the people of Madyan (Midian), a pastoral and trading community located in the northwestern region of the Arabian Peninsula near the Gulf of Aqaba.

The Historical and Dietary Context of Shu’aib:

The people of Madyan were nomadic and semi-nomadic pastoralists, as well as merchants who controlled major trade routes. Their livelihood and daily meals centered around livestock rearing, oasis agriculture, and desert provisions:

  • Sheep and Goat Dairy: Fresh milk, yogurt, and butter were staples of their pastoral diet.
  • Dates and Oasis Crops: Cultivated in the fertile desert oases where water sources were available.
  • Simple Caravan Provisions: Due to their involvement in trade, their diet occasionally incorporated items traded along regional routes, though their daily sustenance remained humble and earth-based.

🧀 Traditional Recipe: “Madyan Pastoral Yogurt and Grain Porridge (Jameed/Kashk style)”

Reflecting the pastoral lifestyle of Madyan—where Prophet Shu’aib’s daughters famously tended to flocks of sheep—a traditional, protein-rich dish combines dried or fermented dairy with basic grains:

Basic Ingredients:

  • Cracked wheat or barley
  • Fermented dried yogurt (Jameed) or thick strained yogurt (Labneh)
  • Water and a pinch of salt
  • A drizzle of olive oil or a touch of ghee

Traditional Preparation Steps:

  1. Preparing the Grains: Boil the cracked wheat or barley in water until it softens completely into a thick base.
  2. Reconstituting and Simmering the Dairy: Dissolve the dried fermented yogurt in water (or use thick strained yogurt) and pour it gently over the warm cooked grains, stirring continuously over low heat.
  3. Simmering: Let the mixture meld together into a rich, tangy, and deeply nourishing porridge.
  4. Finishing: Drizzle with a little olive oil or melted ghee before serving warm as an authentic taste of ancient pastoral life.
