Following the legacy of Abraham and Isaac, Allah bestowed prophethood upon Isaac’s righteous son, Jacob (Ya’qub), peace be upon him. Known also in scripture as Israel (the servant of God), Jacob was a man of immense faith, profound spiritual depth, and legendary patience in the face of agonizing personal trials.
The Early Life and Covenant
Jacob grew up under the direct guidance of his father Isaac and grandfather Abraham, absorbing the pure principles of monotheism. Allah blessed him abundantly, granting him not only steadfast faith but also a large and promising family consisting of twelve sons. Among these sons, Jacob held a special, deeply affectionate bond with two brothers: Joseph (Yusuf) and Benjamin, who were born of his beloved wife Rachel.
Because of Joseph’s profound purity, wisdom, and a remarkable dream he shared with his father—where eleven stars, the sun, and the moon bowed down to him—Jacob recognized that Joseph was destined for a lofty prophetic station. Fearing the jealousy of Joseph’s older half-brothers, Jacob lovingly warned him to keep the dream secret.
The Agony of Separation
The jealousy of the older brothers eventually boiled over into a malicious plot. They took young Joseph on the pretext of playing in the countryside, threw him into a deep well, and returned to their aging father in the evening weeping false tears, claiming that a wolf had devoured him while they were distracted. They brought back Joseph’s tunic stained with fake blood.
When Jacob heard the devastating news, his heart shattered. Recognizing the deception instantly, he responded with one of the most famous expressions of noble endurance recorded in history: “Rather, your souls have enticed you to something, so patience is most fitting. And Allah is the one to be sought against that which you describe.”
Despite his overwhelming grief, which caused him to weep continuously for years until he lost his eyesight from sorrow, Jacob never lost hope in the ultimate mercy and plan of Allah.
Decades of Steadfast Hope
Decades passed by in a state of profound longing and quiet grief. Whenever his sons complained of his perpetual sadness over Joseph, Jacob would reply with a heart anchored in absolute trust: “I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah, and I know from Allah that which you do not know.” He urged his sons to travel back to Egypt during times of famine to search for their lost brother Benjamin, who had been detained, and to never despair of Allah’s relief.
The Miraculous Reunion
When the brothers arrived in Egypt and stood before the high-ranking official—not realizing he was their long-lost brother Joseph—Joseph finally revealed his true identity to them, forgave them completely for their past sins, and handed them his sacred tunic, telling them to place it over their father’s face to restore his sight.
As the caravan departed Egypt carrying the fragrant scent of Joseph’s tunic, Jacob, sitting far away in Canaan, turned to those around him and said: “Indeed, I perceive the smell of Joseph, if you would not think me weakened [in mind].”
When the messenger arrived and cast the tunic over Jacob’s face, his sight was instantly restored. Shortly after, the entire family migrated to Egypt, where Jacob was joyfully reunited with Joseph after decades of separation. As they met, Joseph raised his parents to the throne, and they fell down in prostration of gratitude to Allah, fulfilling the prophetic dream of Joseph’s youth.
