Following the eras of the later prophets, Allah raised a devoted and sincere messenger to guide the people of Nineveh (located in modern-day Iraq): Jonah (Yunus), peace be upon him. He was sent to a prosperous yet deeply corrupt city whose inhabitants had plunged into polytheism, injustice, and wickedness.
The Rejection and the Departure
Yunus began his mission with immense dedication, calling his people to abandon their idols, turn away from their sins, and worship Allah alone. He warned them passionately of the impending divine punishment if they persisted in their disobedience.
However, the people of Nineveh responded with arrogance, mockery, and stubborn rejection. Frustrated by their hostility and feeling that his mission had reached a dead end, Yunus made a critical error of judgment: he departed from his city in anger, without waiting for explicit divine permission or commands from Allah to leave his post.
The Storm at Sea
Seeking to escape, Yunus traveled to a nearby port and boarded a heavily laden cargo ship to cross the sea. As the ship sailed out into the deep waters, a sudden, ferocious storm struck. The towering waves threatened to shatter the vessel, and the terrified crew realized the ship was dangerously overburdened.
According to maritime custom, they decided to cast lots to determine who among the passengers should be thrown overboard to lighten the load and save the rest. The lot fell three times on Yunus. Recognizing that this was a sign of divine decree, Yunus willingly stepped forward, and the sailors cast him into the raging sea.
In the Depths of the Whale
Instantly, as Yunus plunged into the dark, turbulent waters, Allah commanded a massive whale to swallow him whole. The whale engulfed Yunus, descending into the pitch-black depths of the ocean. Inside the belly of the whale, surrounded by layers of darkness—the darkness of the night, the darkness of the sea, and the darkness of the whale’s belly—Yunus found himself cut off from all human aid.
In that moment of absolute isolation and despair, Yunus did not despair of his Creator. Instead, his heart turned completely to Allah in profound repentance and humility. From the depths of the ocean, he raised one of the most powerful and sincere supplications recorded in history, as mentioned in the Quran:
“La ilaha illa anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu mina al-zalimin”
(There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.)
The Miraculous Deliverance and Return
Hearing his sincere plea from the dark abyss, Allah accepted Yunus’s repentance and commanded the whale to cast him out onto a barren shore. Exhausted, weak, and frail, Yunus lay on the deserted beach. Out of His infinite mercy, Allah caused a gourd tree (Yaqtin) to grow rapidly over him, providing shade, medicinal leaves, and nourishment until his strength was fully restored.
Meanwhile, back in Nineveh, an extraordinary event had occurred. Realizing the truth of Yunus’s warnings as dark, ominous clouds gathered over their city, the entire population of Nineveh experienced a sudden change of heart. Overwhelmed by remorse, men, women, children, and even livestock were brought out into the fields as the people fell to their knees in collective repentance, begging Allah for forgiveness. Accepting their sincere turnaround, Allah lifted the impending punishment and showered them with mercy.
When Yunus returned to Nineveh, he found his people transformed, welcoming him with open arms and faithful hearts. The story of Jonah stands as an eternal testament to the power of sincere repentance, proving that no matter how deep the darkness of sin or trial may be, turning back to Allah will always bring divine light and salvation
