The Food of Prophet Al-Yasa’ (Elisha – PBUH)

In the chronological sequence of prophetic history, Prophet Al-Yasa’ (Elisha, peace be upon him) comes after Prophet Ilyas (Elijah). He continued the prophetic mission in the region of the northern Levant, guiding the children of Israel with wisdom, righteousness, and dedication.

The Historical and Dietary Context of Al-Yasa’:

Working closely alongside and succeeding Prophet Ilyas, Al-Yasa’ lived a life focused on spiritual guidance and community leadership:

  • Wholesome Land Provisions: Like his predecessor, his lifestyle was humble and grounded in the agricultural blessings of the Levantine plains and hills—incorporating locally harvested grains, olives, fresh fruits, and spring water.
  • Hospitality and Simple Sharing: As a prophet dedicated to the service of his people, his meals reflected modesty, community sharing, and gratitude for the earth’s natural yield.

🫓 Traditional Recipe: “Levantine Olive Oil and Herb Flatbread (Manaqish/Simple Hearth Bread)”

Reflecting the wholesome, earth-connected provisions of the agricultural Levant during the era of the prophets:

Basic Ingredients:

  • Simple whole-wheat flour dough (water, flour, natural yeast or sourdough, and a pinch of salt)
  • Cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil
  • Wild thyme (Za’atar) or local dried herbs

Traditional Preparation Steps:

  1. Preparing the Dough: Knead the whole-wheat flour with water and salt into a smooth dough, allowing it to rest until it rises naturally.
  2. Shaping: Roll out the dough into flat, round discs on a lightly floured surface.
  3. Drizzling and Seasoning: Generously press your fingers into the dough to create small dimples, then brush or pool pure extra virgin olive oil across the surface, sprinkling wild herbs evenly over the top.
  4. Baking: Bake on a hot stone or iron griddle until golden, crisp on the edges, and fragrant. Serve warm as a staple of humble, blessed hospitality.
