The Food of Prophet Ishaq (Isaac – PBUH)

In the chronological sequence of prophetic history, Prophet Ishaq (peace be upon him) comes after his older half-brother Prophet Ismail. He lived and propagated the message in the fertile lands of Canaan (the Levant/Palestine region), following in the footsteps of his father, Prophet Ibrahim.

The Historical and Dietary Context of Ishaq:

Unlike the arid desert environment of early Mecca, the Levant was characterized by rolling hills, lush valleys, and abundant agriculture. The household of Ishaq maintained a pastoral and agricultural lifestyle typical of the region:

  • Rich Agricultural Produce: Olives, grapes, figs, and an abundance of cereal grains (wheat and barley).
  • Livestock and Dairy: Raising sheep, goats, and cattle, providing a steady supply of fresh milk, butter, and meat.
  • Game and Field Harvests: The traditional patriarchal lifestyle involved hunting game and preparing hearty family meals from local harvests.

🍲 Traditional Recipe: “Levantine Lentil and Wheat Stew (Bissara style)”

A staple of the ancient agricultural communities of Canaan, this hearty, nutrient-dense pot combines legumes and grains to provide sustained energy:

Basic Ingredients:

  • Split lentils or whole brown lentils
  • Cracked wheat or barley
  • Water, coarse salt, and a dash of extra virgin olive oil
  • Onions (sautéed or slow-cooked for flavor)

Traditional Preparation Steps:

  1. Simmering the Legumes and Grains: Combine the rinsed lentils and cracked wheat in a deep clay pot with water and a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to a gentle simmer.
  2. Slow Cooking: Let the mixture cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until the lentils and grains completely break down into a thick, smooth, and nourishing porridge.
  3. Finishing: Drizzle generously with fresh, cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil just before serving to add richness and authentic regional flavor.
  4. Serving: Enjoy warm alongside simple whole-grain flatbread, reminiscent of the wholesome, land-based sustenance of the region.
