Following the eras of the early prophets and judges of the Children of Israel, Allah raised a remarkable leader who combined the highest spiritual station of prophethood with absolute political sovereignty and worldly power: David (Dawud), peace be upon him. He is celebrated in history and scripture for his breathtaking voice, profound wisdom, justice, and absolute devotion to Allah.
The Courageous Youth and the Battle with Goliath
Long before he became a king, David was a young, righteous, and unassuming shepherd boy among the Israelite tribes. During a time of immense trial, the Israelites faced a massive, terrifying army led by a ruthless tyrant named Goliath (Jalut), who mocked their faith and challenged their champions to single combat.
Overwhelmed by fear, the Israelite army shrank back from Goliath’s menacing armor and immense stature. Stepping forward with absolute trust in Allah, young David carried only his simple shepherd’s sling and a few smooth stones. As Goliath charged forward in arrogance, David slung a stone with precise divine guidance, striking Goliath directly on the forehead and felling the giant instantly.
This miraculous victory stunned both armies, catapulting David into national prominence and earning him the profound respect of the community and the reigning king, Saul (Talut).
The Double Blessing: Kingship and Prophethood
Following the passing of leadership, Allah officially bestowed upon David both prophethood and supreme royal authority, uniting spiritual guidance with temporal governance. David established a just kingdom centered in Jerusalem, ruling his people with absolute fairness, wisdom, and the divine laws revealed in the Psalms (Zabur).
Allah describes David as a powerful, resolute leader who frequently turned back to Him in repentance (Al-Awwab). His governance was not based on arbitrary desires, but on divine truth and justice, as commanded by Allah: “O David, indeed We have made you a successor upon the earth, so judge between the people in truth and do not follow [your own] desire, as it will lead you astray from the way of Allah.”
The Miracles of David
Allah favored David with extraordinary, unique miracles that reflected both his spiritual elevation and practical mastery:
- The Divine Psalms and Chanting: Allah blessed David with a voice of such peerless, soul-stirring beauty that when he recited the Psalms (Zabur), the mountains and the wild birds would instinctively join him in rhythmic glorification and praise of Allah.
- The Art of Ironworking: Allah softened iron for David like wax, teaching him the advanced engineering and craftsmanship of forging coats of mail—interlocking iron rings designed to protect soldiers in battle. Instead of taking money from the public treasury, David earned his own livelihood through honest manual labor, crafting armor and distributing much of it to those in need.
The Test of Justice and Repentance
Despite his immense power and piety, David was human and faced profound spiritual tests. One of the most famous trials recorded in the Quran involves two disputing men who climbed over the high walls of David’s private sanctuary (Mihrab), startling him.
Before David could hear both sides fully or render a rushed judgment, they stated their case concerning a dispute over sheep. In that precise moment, David realized that this encounter was a divine test designed to sharpen his commitment to absolute justice and impartiality. Recognizing a momentary lapse in judicial protocol, David instantly fell down in humble prostration, seeking forgiveness from his Lord. Allah accepted his repentance, praising his deep humility and holding him up as an exemplar of righteousness.
A Legacy of Righteous Worship
David was renowned not only for his grand kingdom and iron mastery, but for his rigorous, disciplined personal worship. He balanced statecraft, military leadership, and family life with intense night prayers and frequent fasting. The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, frequently praised the quality of David’s worship, noting that the most beloved prayer to Allah was the prayer of David, and the most beloved fasting was the fasting of David—fasting every alternate day.
David ruled justly for decades until he passed away, leaving behind a prosperous kingdom and passing the sacred mantle of prophethood and wisdom to his equally illustrious son, Solomon (Sulayman), peace be upon them both.
