Following the great cleansing of the earth during the time of Noah, human civilization flourished once again. Generations passed, and descendants spread across different regions of the earth. Among these prosperous nations was the tribe of Aad, who settled in the fertile and lush lands of Al-Ahqaf (sandy dunes, located in the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula).
The Glory and Arrogance of Aad
The people of Aad were blessed immensely by Allah. They were physically gifted, known for their great stature, strength, and robust builds. Allah bestowed upon them abundant wealth, fertile gardens, flowing springs, and magnificent architecture. They became renowned for building towering structures, fortresses, and pillars unlike any other nation of their time, boasting proudly: “Who is greater than us in strength?”
However, with this immense power and material wealth came spiritual corruption. Gradually, they forgot the blessings of Allah and turned away from His guidance, beginning to worship carved idols instead of the One True Creator. Arrogance, tyranny, and oppression took root in their society, as the powerful preyed upon the weak.
The Call of Prophet Hud
To guide this wayward yet powerful nation back to the right path, Allah chose a noble man from among them: Hud, peace be upon him. Hud was known for his wisdom, honesty, and gentle character. He began his mission by calling his people with sincere compassion and wisdom.
Hud urged them: “O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. Will you not then fear Him?” He reminded them of Allah’s abundant favors—how He had given them strength, wealth, and children—and warned them that ingratitude and disobedience would lead to severe divine punishment. He invited them to seek forgiveness from their Lord and turn to Him in repentance, promising them increased blessings and mercy in return.
The Arrogant Rejection
The leaders of Aad, blinded by their wealth and physical strength, met Hud’s sincere message with intense mockery, arrogance, and defiance. They accused Hud of foolishness, madness, and lying, saying: “Indeed, we think you are in foolishness, and indeed, we think you are of the liars.”
Hud responded with ultimate patience and humility, assuring them that he was merely a trustworthy messenger from the Lord of the worlds, seeking no reward or status, but only their salvation. Despite his relentless warnings and appeals over a long period, the majority of the people of Aad persisted in their tyranny, rejecting the message and taunting Hud to bring down the punishment he constantly warned them about if he was telling the truth.
The Divine Punishment: The Fierce Wind
When all hopes of their reform faded and their oppression reached its peak, the divine decree for judgment was finalized. The punishment began with a severe drought; the fertile lands dried up, and the skies withheld their rain. Looking up at the horizon, the people of Aad rejoiced when they saw a massive, dark cloud approaching their valleys, shouting happily: “This is a cloud bringing us rain!”
However, Hud warned them that this was not rain, but rather the very torment they had rushed to bring upon themselves—a furious, howling wind carrying agonizing punishment.
The wind was unleashed by Allah upon them for seven nights and eight days consecutively. It was a freezing, violent gale that tore through everything in its path. It uprooted mighty trees, demolished their grand fortresses, and lifted people into the air, tossing them down violently until they lay lifeless and hollow like uprooted palm tree trunks.
Salvation of the Believers
While the arrogant disbelievers were utterly destroyed, Hud and the small, faithful group of believers who followed him were rescued by the mercy of Allah. They were spared from the devastating storm and migrated safely, leaving behind the ruins of a once-mighty civilization that serves as an eternal lesson for humanity: true power lies not in physical might or worldly wealth, but in faith, humility, and obedience to the Creator.
