Following the miraculous events surrounding his elder brother Ishmael and their father Abraham, peace be upon them, Allah blessed the noble prophet Abraham with a second son in his old age: Isaac (Ishaq), born from his righteous wife Sarah. Isaac grew up to become a pillar of righteousness, wisdom, and steadfast guidance for humanity.
The Glad Tidings and Promise
The birth of Isaac was itself a divine miracle. When angels visited Abraham in the guise of human guests to deliver the sobering news about the impending destruction of the people of Sodom, they also brought joyous tidings to Sarah and Abraham concerning the birth of a knowledgeable son.
Sarah, who was elderly and had been barren her entire life, laughed in astonishment at the news, asking how such a wonder could occur. The angels reassured her, saying: “Do you marvel at the decree of Allah? The mercy of Allah and His blessings be upon you, people of the house.” Soon after, Isaac was born, carrying with him immense blessings, prophetic light, and a lineage that would shape the history of divine revelation.
Upholding the Legacy of Monotheism
Growing up in the household of Abraham—the Friend of Allah—Isaac was immersed in an environment of absolute devotion, hospitality, and pure faith. He absorbed the profound spiritual teachings of his father and learned what it meant to serve Allah with sincerity and righteousness.
As an adult, Isaac was officially chosen by Allah as a prophet and messenger. He remained steadfast in the Levant (Bilad ash-Sham), carrying forward the sacred mission of calling people to the worship of the One True Allah, establishing justice, and teaching moral integrity. Despite facing opposition from surrounding pagan communities, Isaac maintained his patience and gentle disposition, inviting people to truth through wisdom and beautiful preaching.
Character, Wisdom, and Leadership
Isaac was renowned throughout his life for his profound wisdom, forbearance, and unwavering commitment to righteousness. He was a man of deep prayer, often praised in the Quran alongside his father Abraham and his son Jacob for their strength of vision, spiritual depth, and devotion to the Hereafter.
He successfully guided his community through turbulent times, ensuring that the light of monotheism remained burning brightly in the region. Allah describes Isaac and his descendants as leaders who guided by His command, inspiring them to do righteous deeds, establish regular prayers, and give charity.
The Prophetic Lineage
As part of the divine blessing bestowed upon him, Isaac was blessed with a righteous son named Jacob (Ya’qub), who would also be granted prophethood, and through Jacob came Joseph (Yusuf). Thus, Isaac became a crucial ancestral link in the chain of prophets sent to the children of Israel, cementing a lineage defined by divine favor, endurance, and faith.
The story of Isaac stands as a timeless reminder of Allah’s limitless power to grant blessings against all odds, and the beauty of a life dedicated entirely to truth, peace, and obedience to the Creator.
