Following the era of Jacob, Allah bestowed prophethood upon his beloved and righteous son, Joseph (Yusuf), whose life story is described in the Quran as Ahsan al-Qasas (the best of stories) due to its profound lessons in patience, resilience, virtue, and divine providence.
The Prophetic Dream and Betrayal
As a young boy, Joseph saw a vision of profound significance: eleven stars, the sun, and the moon bowing down in prostration to him. His father Jacob immediately recognized this as a sign of a great prophetic future, warning Joseph to keep it secret from his older half-brothers.
Blinded by jealousy over their father’s special affection for Joseph and Benjamin, the older brothers plotted to get rid of him. They took Joseph on a trip and threw him into the depths of a dark well, returning home with a false tale of a wolf attack and a blood-stained tunic.
From the Well to the Palace of Egypt
A passing caravan rescued Joseph from the well and sold him into slavery in Egypt. He was purchased by the Aziz (chief minister/treasurer of Egypt), who recognized his noble presence and instructed his wife, Zulaikha, to treat him honorably, even suggesting they might adopt him.
As Joseph grew into manhood, Allah blessed him with extraordinary physical beauty, wisdom, and knowledge. Zulaikha fell into an infatuation with him and attempted to seduce him when they were alone behind locked doors. Despite her immense power and allure, Joseph resisted, declaring his absolute loyalty to Allah and moral integrity, choosing imprisonment rather than transgression.
The Trials of Prison and Interpretation of Dreams
Though completely innocent, Joseph spent several years in prison to protect public morality. In prison, his character, kindness, and ability to interpret dreams accurately shone brightly. He successfully interpreted the dreams of two fellow inmates—one of whom was released to become the king’s cupbearer.
Years later, the King of Egypt had a disturbing dream: seven fat cows being devoured by seven lean ones, and seven green spikes of grain alongside seven withered ones. Troubled, the king sought an interpretation. The cupbearer remembered Joseph in prison and rushed to him. Joseph not only interpreted the dream—predicting seven years of abundance followed by seven years of severe famine—but also provided a masterclass economic plan to save Egypt from the crisis.
Elevation to Power and Justice
Impressed by his unmatched wisdom, integrity, and brilliance, the king ordered Joseph to be brought out of prison, exonerated him completely from any past wrongdoing, and appointed him as the Minister of Finance and keeper of the nation’s storehouses.
When the severe famine struck neighboring regions, Joseph’s brothers traveled to Egypt to buy grain. They stood before Joseph, failing to recognize him in his royal attire, while Joseph recognized them instantly. Through a series of brilliant and patient steps, Joseph eventually brought his elderly father Jacob and all his family to Egypt. As they reunited, his parents and brothers bowed down to him in greeting, fulfilling the precise vision Joseph had seen as a child in his youth, and prompting Joseph to praise Allah for His infinite mercy and perfect plan
